So you've got an idea for a business. Maybe you've even picked a name and started creating a website (congrats!), but something still seems to be missing. You like at other websites and you admire just how perfectly they seem to be put together, with a great color schemes, simple fonts, awesome images, and a stand out logo.
Your logo matters. Don't settle for less than something you love.
Do you know why McDonald's, Coca-Cola, and Nike are so universally known? It's because they each have a recognizable logo. People all over the world know that the Golden Arches means McDonald's. The name and the logo have become interchangeable. (There's even a game where you name the company based on the logo. It's addicting.)
Now, you may not have the brand recognition that Nike and Coca-Cola do, but that doesn't mean that your logo choice is any less important.
So why is a logo so important to your brand?
1. It gives you brand recognition.
People may know your business name, but the logo should become a quick reminder of you any time someone sees it. You can (and should) use your logo across all of your social media platforms, stationary choices, website pages, and business documents. If the logo is the same, people will know they've got the right person.
Using different logos in different places? You're going to confuse people. They won't know if your profile is really you or someone else.
2. It's a first glimpse into your business and personality.
If you saw a logo that featured a shoe, you would not expect to find an accounting firm behind it. Your logo is going to tell people as soon as they see it the type of business you're in.
It's also a great glimpse into your personality. If you're running a business on your own, everything you do should be a reflection of who you are. The logo is the first place people should see that. Are you bubbly and encouraging? Your logo should use bright colors and fun graphics. More serious and focused? Use a simple color scheme and logo.
Even if you're using a text based logo (which are super popular right now), it should reflect your business and your personality. People want to connect with you up front. They don't want to see your logo and get confused when they read your copy or watch your videos.
3. It gives you a place in the business community.
Business have logos. It's just a fact. And if you're trying to start your own business, you need to have a logo too. It will help you when you make connections, give you a recognizable image to go along with your website and services, and show people that you're taking this seriously.
So you know you need that logo, but how do you get it?
There are lots of people out there who can design a logo for your business or you can easily pick out something stock, but if you really want to stand out and love your logo, you need to design it yourself.
Sure, I design logos for businesses and they look awesome, but unless my client is involved in the process, it won't be a logo that really stands for who they are. If you're going to work with a designer, make sure you talk to them, let them know what you want, what your business is all about, and the values you focus on.
Want to do it on your own? You totally can! Since so many logos are text based, it's easy to pick a great font and use it for your logo.
