Why I Switched from ConvertKit to Flodesk

When I started Lemon and the Sea over 5 years ago, email marketing was starting to be a big deal, but platforms were limited. Sure, there were a variety of different companies that would help you send newsletters to your email list, but they were designed for large companies sending out basic text emails and weren’t designed with creative entrepreneurs in mind

I recently switched my mailing list from ConvertKit to Flodesk and I love the new platform! I'm sharing 6 reasons why I switched, including pricing, design, and easy workflows without all the tags and automations. It's a great email marketing platfo…

I first started my email list on MailChimp because they offered a free plan and were pretty easy to use, but the free features were limited (they’ve since expanded their tagging options). As my email list grew and I learned more about how email marketing could benefit a service-based business, I switched to ConvertKit. I used this platform for years (never taking full advantage of it’s tools) until I heard about a new email marketing platform designed specifically for creatives – Flodesk.

It didn’t take much to convince me to switch – I loved Flodesk’s mission and the design-focused email templates. Today I’m sharing exactly why I switched and how I’ve liked using Flodesk over the past year.

1. One monthly price, unlimited subscribers

Unlike ConvertKit, which starts at $29 per month and increases once you reach 3,000 subscribers, Flodesk doesn’t penalize you for growing your list. This was perfect for me because my email list is small (around 300 subscribers) and it’s not my primary means of bringing in new clients.

Whether you’re looking to start a small newsletter or build an email marketing empire, you pay the same monthly price. Plus, you can get Flodesk for 50% off and pay just $19 per month during their beta phase using my code: lemon50

2. Creative freedom

As a designer, how an email looks is important! For the first time ever in email marketing, you can use custom fonts and image collages. You can set you brand colors and logo for easy editing and then customize every email to fit your brand (without having to dig into code).

3. Click and Drag Email Builder

Want to look like you have an entire marketing team crafting and coding your every email? Look no further! Flodesk puts the power of a professional designer in your pocket. Their click and drag email builder makes it easier than ever to create beautifully branded emails (no coding required).

I know from experience just how valuable this is because I have clients who still use ConvertKit and regularly get emails asking for help because their images aren’t the right size or their fonts are acting weird, which means digging into the HTML of the email to find and correct the issue.

4. Templates designed to convert

To get you started, Flodesk has a library of gorgeous templates to help you welcome, nurture, and convert subscribers into customers. Built in partnership with other successful entrepreneurs, each template is designed to help you up your email game. Plus, customizing them is simple. A few clicks and the templates transform to match your brand’s unique look and feel.

This is exactly how I created all my emails and workflows when I switched from ConvertKit to Flodesk because it was easy to have great looking emails that I knew would convert without having to design each one by hand.

5. Add your Instagram feed

Want an easy way to connect email subscribers with the incredible content you’re sharing on social? Flodesk has you covered. Easily integrate your Instagram account into outgoing emails to showcase your most recent posts. Create a horizontal gallery or a pin-board style collage in seconds.

6. Easy workflows

One of my least favorite parts of setting up and running my email marketing with ConvertKit was the multi-step process that was involved with creating workflows. Flodesk makes it easy to create a Welcome Sequence or to deliver an opt-in without needing to have multiple tabs open and a step-by-step to-do list every time.

Believe me, this is a huge time saver. With clients still on ConverKit, setting up a new opt-in looks like this:

  1. Create form in ConvertKit

  2. Make sure the right opt-in link is set up

  3. Update the automatic email to deliver the opt-in

  4. Create a landing page on Squarespace

  5. Embed the form on Squarespace page

  6. Set up automations in ConvertKit to tag people with the opt-in name, branch of the business, and to send a follow-up email

  7. Test is all to make sure it’s working correctly

With Flodesk, I can just create a form, set it to a specific Segment, and then create a workflow to deliver the opt-in (and I can design the email IN the workflow set-up instead of in a different part of the website).

7. No more tag confusion

Part of what makes creating workflow so easy it that with Flodesk you can forget about all the stress that comes from tagging. No more duplicate tags or thinking about it too late—Flodesk does all of the tagging for you! You can see which of your subscribers are most engaged, what they signed up for, what they clicked on, there’s tons of data automatically captured for you. And you have full segmentation capabilities!

If you’re ready to start an email list or want to switch to a platform that makes sending great emails easy, check out Flodesk and use the code lemon50 for 50% off.
