What's Holding You Back?
An honest look at why I've been scared to invest in my business
Hiring someone to help you in your business can be intimidating. You're always wondering - who should I choose? Can I trust them with my business? What if they take my money and disappear?
I get it - I've hired a few people to work both on and in my business. I've invested in courses, coaching programs, and events. It's always a little bit scary - every time.
Right now, I'm considering making the largest investment I've ever made in my business and actually carrying some credit card debt (interest free) to do it. While that's super intimidating for me, I've finally decided that I needed to explore what was holding me back.
Now, I'm not big on the woo-woo side of business and I'm skeptical of “mindset work" as a rule, but when it came to making my next business investment, I had to sit down and get a little woo-woo.
Why? Because I knew that this investment would be really helpful. It involves working with someone I respect and learn from and working towards some changes in my business that will give me more freedom and flexibility (don't worry, Lemon and the Sea isn't going anywhere).
And yet…I was still hesitating.
After really sitting down with my thoughts, this is what I came to - I'm scared to make this investment because I don't want it to turn out like all the others. I was afraid that I would go through the program, make the changes in my business, and still not see any growth.
After all, I've done that before (four times in fact). It's not that those programs and investments weren't valuable - I learned a lot, I made some great improvements to my process, my design skills, and my brand. But they weren't the magic bullet I was secretly hoping they would be.
But what I've realized is, that's not the program's fault.
The programs included exactly what they promised and were impactful for my business. I just didn't follow through with the marketing side.
Marketing is my least favorite part of running a business. I don't want to talk to hundreds of people or attend huge events. In my dream world, clients would just find me, book, and off we'd go.
But we don't live in that dream world.
Which is why, this time around, I'm committing to doing more. I know that no program, course, redesign, or coach is going to be a magic bullet. They give me the steps and encouragement, but I have to do the work (in my case, marketing) to see the results I'm working towards.
If you feel like you're on the treadmill of magic bullet investments, I want to encourage you to get a little woo-woo and dig into what you might be missing. It's probably just one little piece (that you don't like doing) that would help you see real change in your business.

If it's your website design that you're putting off because you're afraid that it's a big commitment and a lot of money that you won't get back, let me assure you - strategic website design does help if you know what your website needs to do and you put in the work wit your designer.
But seriously, don't invest if you're not ready. I'm always happy to chat and see where you are and if a website design (or redesign) project is the right choice for you right now.
